Self-publishing vs traditional publishing: an honest comparison

Both routes publish books. They differ in who takes the risk, who does the work, how long it takes, and what you keep. Neither is morally superior, and the right answer depends on the book in front of you.

Speed

Traditional publishing runs on a 12–24 month calendar after a deal is signed, and finding the deal can take a year on its own. Self-publishing is measured in days. If your book is tied to a moment, that difference decides the question.

Money

Traditional: an advance against royalties, typically 8–15% on print and 25% on digital net receipts.
Self-published: no advance, but 60–70% of the sale price. On Writro, 70%.
Traditional pays the production costs. Self-publishing means you pay for editing and cover — or do them yourself.

Rights and control

A publishing contract licenses rights, sometimes for the life of the copyright, and the publisher decides the title, cover and price. Self-publishing keeps every right and every decision with you — including the bad ones.

Editing and quality

This is the strongest honest argument for traditional publishing: professional structural editing makes books better, and most self-published books skip it. If you go independent, buy that edit anyway. It is the highest-return money you will spend on the book.

Distribution and discovery

Traditional publishing gets physical shelves, reviews and prize eligibility. Self-publishing gets an online storefront and whatever audience you can reach. Marketing is largely the author's job in both cases.

How to decide

Is the book time-sensitive? Publish independently.
Do you have a platform your readers already reach you through? Independent economics favour you.
Is print, prizes or academic credibility the goal? Pursue traditional.
Unsure? Publishing a first eBook independently teaches you the market and does not disqualify you from a later deal.
